What Type Am I? : Discover Who You Really Are
by Renee Baron Customer Book Reviews:
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the most widely used psychological indicator in the world. Millions of people take the test annually. Now a family therapist explains this fascinating system of ideas to the public in a way that is entertaining and easy to absorb. Based on the work of Carl Jung, the MBTI is a system that discusses people's individual preferences on four basic scales: how they relate to the world, take in information, make decisions, and manage their lives. Renee Baron takes on the complexity of the sixteen personality types and makes them accessible so the general reader can comprehend them, find their own type, and use the knowledge to enrich their own lives. She presents information about individual strengths and weaknesses along with suggestions for personal growth and awareness. As an introduction to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator temperament test, this is a favorite book of mine. It is given to million of business students and job applicants each year. It is a pleasure to read with its funny cartoons. This a good book to start with if you are looking for a not too scientific understanding of the relationship between your personality and your environment. This is a good example how a relatively complex issue can be presented didactically simple and interesting.

Psychological Types, Collected works of C.G. Jung, Vol.6
by C. G. Jung, Gerhard Adler, R. F.C. Hull
One of the most important of Jung's longer works, and probably the most famous book his work, Psychological Types appeared in German in 1921 after a "fallow period" of eight years during which Jung had published little. He called it "the fruit of nearly twenty years' work in the domain of practical psychology," and in his autobiography he wrote: "This work sprang originally from my need to define the ways in which my outlook differed from Freud's and Adler's. In attempting to answer this question, I came across the problem of types; for it is one's psychological type, which from the outset determines and limits a person's judgment. My book, therefore, was an effort to deal with the relationship of the individual to the world, to people and things. It discussed the various aspects of consciousness, the various attitudes the conscious mind might take toward the world, and thus constitutes a psychology of consciousness regarded from what might be called a clinical angle." In illustrating his system of personality types Jung relied not so much on formal case data as on the countless impressions and experiences derived from the treatment of nervous illnesses, from interaction with people of all social levels, "friend and foe alike," and from an analysis of his own psychological nature. The book is rich in material drawn from literature, aesthetics, religion, and philosophy. The extended chapters give general descriptions of the types and definitions of Jung's principal psychological concepts, which are key documents in analytical psychology. The collected works of C.G.Jung contain nine essays, written between 1922 and 1941, on Paracelsus, Freud, Picasso, the Sinologist Richard Wilhelm, Joyce's Ulysses, artistic creativity generally, and the source of artistic creativity in archetypal structures. For anyone interested in understanding more about Psychological Types this book is a must. Once you read the book you understand why C.G. Jung is considered as one of the pioneers of personality theories. Not recommendable for beginners as you need some background to understand the philosophy and concepts. |
