Start Your Own Business, Third Edition
by Rieva Lesonsky Customer Review
Whether you're just thinking about starting a business and have taken the first steps or already own your own business, this comprehensive, and easy-to-understand best-selling guide can help ensure your success. The book starts with "Are you ready to be an entrepreneur?" and goes on to starting vs. buying, choosing the name, attracting investors, hiring employees, location, loans, image, leasing versus buying equipment, choosing a phone system or learning from failure. Written in a friendly, down-to-earth style, “Start Your Own Business” walks you through every step of the startup process, from evaluating your business idea to laying the groundwork to running day-to-day operations. You'll learn how to conduct market research, choose a business structure, create a winning business plan, handle your bookkeeping and taxes, run your business from home and much more. The book also contains dozens of sample forms, worksheets, charts, graphs and illustrations to help simplify even the most complex startup issues, as well as hot links to relevant websites. Genevieve Buck from Chicago Tribune writes: “Get set, go! Start Your Own Business claims to be "The Only Start-Up Book You'll Ever Need." That sounds mighty boastful, but the author's credentials are strong, the book loaded with business resources and the information is down-to-earth (Everything you need to start a successful business... except the money. But we'll show you how to get that, too!"). The Houston Business Journal writes (July 1, 2004): If you are thinking about owning your own business, this book is for you. But if you already own a business, this may be too elementary for you. But if not, I highly recommend this book.

by John Spiers
At some point in most careers one considers the idea of starting a business. Some people want to pursue a dream, some figure they can beat the boss at his or her own game, and for some people unemployment forces the issue. US Customs tells us most international traders are small businesses, and if you are interested in starting a (many times highly profitable) business which conducts international trade, this book is a "must-read". In a very clear and engaging style, John Spiers leads the reader step by step through the entire business process, including product conception, getting feedback, essential research, sourcing, and marketing (how to bring the product to the market). For me the title "How small business trades worldwide" is somewhat misleading as this book tells much more than this! It is an extremely helpful and practical guide to start any small business, independently if you wish to sell a service or a product.

Weekend Entrepreneur
by Michelle Anton and Jennifer Basye Sander
Are you hoping to build a better life for you and your family? Imagine earning thousands more each year – all in your free time. Thousands of people have found a way to live the lifestyle of your dreams – and now you can, too. Over a hundred weekend entrepreneurs share their secrets. It’s all the information you need to forge your own path to the life you deserve. Anton and Basye-Sander have amassed a great selection of business ideas to get anyone started in owning their own business and earning extra cash. The authors’ goal is to help people start a small side business but any of these ideas could be turned into a primary income. Part II of Weekend Entrepreneur is the meat of the book with business ideas organized in category: Making Money with a Strong Back, Creating and Selling Products and Services, Making Extra Money with Online Businesses and Internet Auctions, and Designing Seminars, Boot Camps and Events. Can you believe you can make money renting out space that isn’t yours? Did you know there is a demand for beekeepers? It is possible for a single-topic cookbook to net you a steady income? The authors describe each business idea and tell a story to illustrate how someone started this type of business. They also share the skills required, start-up tools and expenses, and possible roadblocks or concerns. Anton and Basye-Sander are honest and encouraging. If your handwriting is good you may want to consider starting a calligraphy business. You will need some artistic talent and lessons (a source for free lessons is provided). Suggestions on pricing and how to market this service are included with the description. I recommend this book to everyone - If you have a business and want to be inspired, if you want to start a business, if you work for someone but need a creative boost or if you have a young adult in your home with entrepreneurial inspirations. This is a fun and exciting book to read.
