Radio
talk-show host and best-selling author Ramsey (Financial Peace) states
in his book "winning at money is 80 percent behavior and 20 percent head
knowledge" to get out of debt and achieve financial fitness. Our current
financial position represents the sum total of the decisions we've made
to this point, he tells us, and we must take personal responsibility for
our financial problems.
The
bedrock of his system is simple: work hard, pay what you owe and stay out of
debt. His main commandment for financial fitness is "Pay cash." He first exhorts the reader to
take "baby steps," which are designed to build on each other: first, save
$1,000 as an emergency fund; then, pay off all debts from smallest to
largest; save a larger three-to-six-month emergency fund; finally, start to
save for college and pay off your home mortgage. Ramsey understands the
difficulty in putting these steps into action, and therefore packs his book
with personal testimonials from everyday people who have used his system and
have become debt free, with obvious struggles. Ramsey proposes a seven-step
plan, which includes paying off all debts except the home mortgage at an
accelerated speed, creating a financial safety net that covers three to six
months' expenses, investing 15 percent of income in a retirement fund, and
saving for children's college expenses. While Ramsey provides some helpful
charts and graphs so readers can keep track of their efforts to follow his
steps, the strength of this book is that it is a straightforward
motivational tool. He provides the brutally direct truth about the hard work
it takes to become free of debt, and his directness is a great part of the
book's charm.

The Secrets of Wealth: The Beginner's Guide to Financial Freedom

What does it take to get rich? Do you
know? After reading The Secrets of Wealth you will know that
YOU CAN GET RICH WITHOUT EARNING A BIG SALARY or living like a pauper.
The idea behind the book is to create a set of easy to follow and easy
to remember strategies and techniques for people to use in order to get
control over their financial and personal lives. The author has done a
lot of research into what the truly rich did when they were starting out
and put it all into this book. The Secrets as you'll learn are not
groundbreaking, revolutionary ideas or strategies. They're simply the
stuff that works when it comes to saving, budgeting, investing, and
becoming Financially Free. By sectioning the material into ten Secrets,
readers can easily identify with the strategies and tactics that they
should use. For instance one of the chapters in The Millionaire Next
Door talks about being frugal, but readers don't come away with that
concept as well as they could had the authors labeled the chapter: LIVE
BELOW YOUR MEANS.
Whether you're just starting out or have your wealth-building machine in
place, this book can help you for your financial management. Most books on "getting rich" just focus
on only what has worked for one person or a small group of people. This
book will tell you how you can get rich investing through the stock
market, or managing your finances, or real estate. In short, every
reader, whether they have $10 a month or $1,000 a month to invest, will
be able to use the principles and techniques discussed in this book.
There are Action Plans that appear at the end of each chapter that help
guide the beginning wealth builder.
